Electric motorcycle donation
Donate an electric motorcycle, and get an honest read on the pack
Electric motorcycles have a short used-market history and one dominant variable: the battery. A pack that holds capacity makes the bike genuinely desirable to a specific buyer. A degraded pack on a discontinued model can cost more to replace than the bike will bring, and we will tell you which yours looks like.
Where these come from
Early adopters. Someone bought an electric bike when the category was new, used it as a commuter for a few years, and has moved on or moved somewhere without charging.
Riders who found the range did not fit their riding. Electric bikes are excellent commuters and limited tourers, and some buyers discover that after the fact. Those bikes usually have low mileage.
Owners of light electric off-road and supermoto machines, which sell well and cross over with the electric off-road page.
On a trailer, and unplugged
It rides on a trailer or in a truck bed. It does not need to be charged and it does not need to run.
One thing specific to electric bikes: if the pack is completely flat, some models will not release the parking brake or will not roll out of a locked mode. Tell us if the bike is fully dead and whether it rolls freely, because it may need to be lifted rather than pushed.
Send the charger and any charging cables. On an electric bike a matched charger is close to essential for the next owner, and it is worth very little on its own. Take your helmet and gear.
What decides what one brings
- Battery health. The whole question. Whether the pack charges, roughly what range it delivers now against when it was new, and whether any fault codes appear.
- Model support. Whether the manufacturer is still in business and still supplying parts and software. A bike from an orphaned brand with a dead pack is close to unsaleable, and that is worth knowing.
- Mileage and motor condition. Electric drivetrains wear very little, so mileage matters less here than on a combustion bike. Pack age matters more.
- Charger and accessories. Present, matched, working. A fast-charge module is a real add.
- Software and updates. On some models a bike that is behind on firmware or locked to a previous owner account is a genuine obstacle. Tell us if you know.
Makes we accept
Parts and software support vary enormously, and buyers know exactly which brands are still standing.
- Street: Zero S, SR, DS, FX and SR/F, Harley-Davidson LiveWire and LiveWire One, Energica Ego and Eva, BMW C Evolution, Lightning.
- Light and off-road crossover: Sur-Ron Light Bee and Storm Bee, Talaria Sting, Segway X160 and X260, Stark Varg, Cake Kalk and Osa.
- Scooters and commuters: NIU, Vespa Elettrica, Gogoro, Ryvid, Ryvid Anthem, Sondors Metacycle.
Not seeing yours? The list above is a search aid, not a restriction. We accept any make or model in this category, named here or not, including orphan brands and builders long out of business. What decides a donation is the condition and the paperwork, never the badge, so put yours on the form even if it is not listed.
Manufacturer names appear here so you can find your own bike. No manufacturer sponsors, endorses or is affiliated with this program.
The paperwork, and what you can deduct
A street motorcycle is a titled vehicle and the title has to transfer. If it is lost, most states have a duplicate process and the state title rules page walks through yours. If there is a loan against it we need the lien release. The VIN is on the steering neck and usually on the engine case as well. Light electric off-road machines are often not titled at all, which is normal; a bill of sale and the frame serial number is what we need in that case.
Giving Center sells the bike and your deduction is the gross sale proceeds on Form 1098-C. A recent street-legal electric motorcycle with a healthy pack from a supported brand can clear $5,000, where the IRS requires a qualified appraisal and Form 8283 Section B at your expense. A mid-range bike with a good pack usually lands between $500 and $5,000, where Section A applies.
A bike with a degraded pack from a discontinued brand can sell under $500, because the replacement pack may cost more than the whole machine. In that band the deduction is the lesser of fair market value or $500 with a written acknowledgment. That is the honest read on that specific case and we will tell you if it is yours before anything is scheduled.
Electric motorcycle donation questions
The pack barely holds a charge now.
Tell us the brand and the model, because that decides the answer. On a supported brand it is a known repair and the bike still sells. On a discontinued brand a replacement pack can exceed the bike value, and we will say so.
Do I need to charge it before pickup?
No. It travels unplugged.
It is completely dead and will not roll.
Worth telling us. Some models lock up when the pack is flat and need to be lifted rather than pushed. The driver has to know.
Should I send the charger?
Yes, and it matters more here than on any other bike. A matched charger is close to essential for the next owner.
The bike is still linked to my account in the app.
Tell us. On some models that has to be released before a new owner can use it fully, and it is easier to handle before pickup than after.
