Disc harrow donation
Donate a disc harrow, blades worn and all
Disc harrows are still in active use on most farms, which makes them one of the better tillage donations. Blades are a known consumable and buyers expect to replace them, so worn discs lower the number without ending the sale.
Where donated discs come from
Farms retiring an older disc after moving to a vertical tillage tool or a newer high-speed disc. The old tandem still works.
Estates and farm dispersals. A disc is almost always in the lot when a farm sells out.
Operations that shrank their acres and no longer need the working width.
Folded, on a step-deck
A pull-type disc folds for transport and goes on a step-deck or drop-deck. A large unfolded working width is not the issue as long as it folds; if the fold cylinders are dead, tell us, because that changes the trailer and may require a permit.
Tell us the working width, whether it folds, and whether the transport wheels and tires hold air.
Tillage and planting equipment is where grouping matters most. A plow, a disc and a cultivator on one trip costs a fraction of three separate pickups, and a matched tillage set often sells better together. List everything you have on one form.
What decides what a disc brings
- Working width. The defining spec, and the 20 to 30-foot range covers most of the market.
- Blade diameter and remaining wear. Blades wear down and buyers measure them. Fresh blades are real money and worn ones are a known cost.
- Bearing and hanger condition. Gang bearings are the expensive failure and an inspector checks them first.
- Frame and fold cylinders. Bent gangs, a cracked frame and dead fold cylinders are the faults that matter.
- Rear attachment. A rolling basket, harrow or crumbler on the back adds and widens the buyer pool.

The paperwork, and what you can deduct
Farm equipment is not titled. Ownership is established with the purchase invoice, a bill of sale, a farm asset record, or a lien release if it was financed. Find the serial plate and photograph it. If the machine is part of an estate or a farm partnership, whoever signs needs authority to sign for it.
Giving Center sells the implement and your deduction is the gross sale proceeds on Form 1098-C. A large late-model disc or a vertical tillage tool can clear $5,000, where a qualified appraisal and Form 8283 Section B are required at your expense. Implements in this class commonly sell between $500 and $5,000, where Form 8283 Section A applies and no appraisal is required. Older or heavily worn examples fall under $500, where the deduction is the lesser of fair market value or $500 and we send a written acknowledgment rather than a Form 1098-C. If you donate several implements together each is itemized, and similar items are grouped for the IRS reporting thresholds.
Most farm equipment is a depreciated business asset, which makes a conversation with your accountant worth having before the pickup. Farm business property follows different rules than a personal donation.
Disc harrow donation questions
The blades are worn way down.
Expected. Blades are a known consumable and buyers measure and price them. It lowers the number without ending the sale.
The fold cylinders are seized.
Tell us. An unfoldable disc is an over-dimension load and needs a permit, which affects transport cost.
One gang is bent.
Worth disclosing. Bent gangs and bad bearings are the two faults that actually matter on a disc.
Do you take offset discs?
Yes. Smaller market than tandems and they still sell, particularly in orchard and pasture country.
I have a disc, a field cultivator and a plow.
List all three on one form. One trip, and a matched tillage set frequently sells better together.
