Mini bike donation

Donate a mini bike, and hear which kind you have

Mini bikes split hard into two groups. A vintage 1970s frame with the right name on it has a collector market that pays real money. A modern import mini bike is a small, honest, low-value item. Both are welcome and the numbers are nowhere near each other, so we will tell you which yours is.

Where donated mini bikes come from

Garage and estate clear-outs. A mini bike is the classic thing found hanging on a wall or under a bench after decades, and the family has no idea whether it is worth twenty dollars or two thousand.

Families whose kids used a modern import bike for a couple of summers. Those are the low-value group and they are still easy and free to donate.

Collectors thinning a group of vintage frames. Those we route to a collector sale rather than a general auction, because that is where the buyers are.

It fits in a car trunk

A mini bike is the smallest thing we accept and it rides in a pickup bed, a trailer or sometimes a car trunk. It does not need to run. Essentially the cheapest pickup in the program.

Tell us whether the engine turns over and whether the wheels roll. Neither is required.

Do not restore it, do not repaint it and do not strip it. On a vintage frame, original paint and original parts are the value, and a repaint can genuinely lower what it brings. Leave it exactly as it sits.

What decides what a mini bike brings

  • Vintage or modern. The single biggest split. A 1970s name-brand frame is a collector item; a current import is a utility toy.
  • The name on the frame. On vintage bikes this is most of the value. Find the badge, the decal or a cast-in name on the frame and tell us exactly what it says.
  • Originality. Original engine, original wheels, original seat and original paint. A period-correct engine matters a great deal on a collector frame.
  • Frame straightness. Bent forks and cracked welds are real deductions. Surface rust is expected and fine.
  • Whether it turns over. A running vintage bike is a premium; a complete non-runner is still very saleable.

Makes we accept

On vintage bikes the name is the value, so get it exactly right.

  • Sought-after vintage: Rupp Roadster and Black Widow, Taco 22 and 44, Bonanza, Fox Campus, Bird, Speedway, Heald, Ruttman, Arctic Cat Whisker, Gilson, Hodaka.
  • Common vintage: Honda Z50 Mini Trail and CT70, Yamaha Chappy, Sears Roebuck, Montgomery Ward, Cat and Lil Indian, Gemini, Sachs.
  • Modern: Coleman CT100 and CT200, Baja Warrior and Mini Bike, Massimo, Monster Moto, Icebear, Mega Moto, Tao Motor.

Not seeing yours? The list above is a search aid, not a restriction. We accept any make or model in this category, named here or not, including orphan brands and builders long out of business. What decides a donation is the condition and the paperwork, never the badge, so put yours on the form even if it is not listed.

Manufacturer names appear here so you can find your own machine. No manufacturer sponsors, endorses or is affiliated with this program.

The paperwork, and what you can deduct

Mini bikes are not titled anywhere. A bill of sale is enough, plus a serial number off the frame if one exists, and on many vintage bikes it does not. Nothing goes through the DMV.

Giving Center sells the bike and your deduction is the gross sale proceeds on Form 1098-C. A sought-after original vintage frame can land between $500 and $5,000, occasionally more for a rare model in good condition, where Form 8283 Section A or B applies depending on the figure. Machines in this class commonly sell for under $500. In that band your deduction is the lesser of fair market value or $500, and we send a written acknowledgment rather than a Form 1098-C. We would rather tell you that now than have you expect a 1098-C in January. The pickup still costs you nothing, and the cause still receives something.

So the honest split: if you have a Rupp or a Taco, this may be worth real money and worth handling carefully. If you have a five-year-old import mini bike, expect a small deduction and an easy free pickup.

Mini bike donation questions

How do I tell if mine is worth something?

Find the name. Look for a badge on the frame or fork, a decal on the tank or a name cast into the frame itself, and tell us exactly what it says. On vintage bikes the name is most of the value.

Should I repaint it first?

Please do not. On a vintage frame original paint is worth more than fresh paint, and a repaint can lower the sale.

The engine is not the original one.

Worth telling us. On a collector frame a period-correct engine matters a lot; on a modern bike it barely matters.

It is completely seized and rusty.

Still saleable if the frame is straight and complete. Tell us and we will give you a realistic number.

Is it titled?

No. Mini bikes are not titled anywhere. A bill of sale is enough.
