Donate a teardrop trailer that outlasted the trips
Teardrops hold their value unusually well for something so small. They tow behind almost anything, they store in a garage, and there is a steady stream of buyers who want exactly one. If yours has been sitting, it is worth more than its size suggests.
Where donated teardrops come from
Couples who camped for a decade and stopped, and people who upgraded to something with a bathroom. A teardrop is a first RV and a last RV, and it changes hands at both ends.
Builders who finished a project and moved on. Home-built teardrops are a real tradition and a well-executed one sells readily; a half-finished one is a different conversation and we will be honest about which yours is.
Estates. A teardrop is small enough to be overlooked in an estate and valuable enough to be worth handling properly.
The easiest tow in the RV category
A teardrop tows behind almost any vehicle with a hitch. Sound tires, working lights, an intact coupler and safety chains and it goes. This is among the cheapest pickups in the entire program, which means an unusually large share of the sale reaches the cause.
Tell us the tire age. Small trailer tires age out long before they wear out, and a teardrop that has sat in a garage for six years almost certainly needs them addressed before towing.
Empty the galley and the cabin, take your bedding and gear, and leave anything built in: the cooler well, the stove, the water tank, the battery and any solar. Tell us if the hatch struts are dead, because it has to travel latched.
What decides what a teardrop brings
- Factory built or home built. A recognized builder brings noticeably more. A well-finished home build still sells well; a rough one does not.
- Galley fit-out. A working stove, a sink with a pump, a cooler well or fridge, and cabinetry. The galley is half the appeal.
- Electrical. A house battery, a converter, 110-volt shore power and any solar. Lithium and solar are a meaningful premium.
- Skin and roof. Aluminum skin condition, roof seam sealant and whether water has gotten into the plywood shell. Soft spots at the hatch seam are the common fault.
- Air conditioning and a roof fan. Either one widens the buyer pool in hot climates.

The paperwork, and what you can deduct
Towable RVs are titled in most states, though the rules vary and a few treat smaller trailers differently. We will tell you which applies where you are, and the state title rules page covers the process. If there is a loan against it we need the lien release. Home-built teardrops are the exception worth flagging: whether your state will register a shop-built trailer for a new owner varies, and if it cannot be registered it cannot be sold. Tell us it is a home build up front and we will check before anything is scheduled.
Giving Center sells the trailer and your deduction is the gross sale proceeds on Form 1098-C. A factory-built teardrop in sound condition frequently lands between $500 and $5,000, where Form 8283 Section A applies and no appraisal is needed. A late-model or well-equipped unit can clear $5,000, and above that the IRS requires a qualified appraisal at your expense.
If your teardrop is a bare frame or a stripped shell rather than a finished trailer, use the camper frame page instead. The honest numbers there are much lower and that page says so plainly.

Usually, if your state will register it for a new owner and the build is finished and sound. Tell us it is a home build on the form so we can check the registration question first.
The tires are original from 2013.
Then they need addressing before it is towed, which is normal on a stored teardrop and something we plan for. Tell us the date codes.
Is a teardrop big enough to be worth donating?
Yes. Teardrops punch above their size on resale and they cost almost nothing to move, so a large share of the sale reaches the cause.
Should I leave the solar and battery?
Yes, if you are not keeping them. They are a genuine premium installed and worth little removed.
There is a soft spot at the hatch seam.
That is the classic teardrop fault. It lowers the sale and it does not stop the donation. Photograph the seam and the hatch edge.
