PTO equipment donation

Donate three-point PTO equipment, ideally several pieces at once

Every farm shed has a row of three-point implements that have not been hooked to anything in years. Individually they are modest items. As a group they are a worthwhile donation that costs one trip, and grouping is the single thing that decides whether this makes sense.

Three PTO implements on gravel with no tractor: a rotary cutter, a post hole digger with the auger down and a PTO generator on a three-point frame

Where this equipment comes from

Farms and acreages clearing a shed. A rotary cutter, a box blade, a post hole digger and a landscape rake accumulate over decades and nobody ever deals with them individually.

Estates and property sales, where three-point equipment is typically the last thing left after the tractors have gone.

Owners who sold the tractor. Three-point implements without a tractor are useless on the place and perfectly good to the next buyer.

One trip for the whole row

Three-point implements ride on a flatbed or tilt-deck and several go together easily. The truck costs the same for one item or six, which is exactly why we ask you to list everything.

Walk the shed and list it all: rotary cutters, finish mowers, box blades, landscape rakes, post hole diggers, tillers, seeders, blades, snow blowers, scrapers, PTO generators, pumps and sprayers. If it hooks to a three-point hitch, it belongs on the form.

Tell us whether each PTO driveline is present with its shield. Missing drivelines are a small cost and worth listing accurately. If you still have the tractor, donate it all together; the implements effectively ride along free.

What decides what PTO equipment brings

  • Type and working width. A rotary cutter and a finish mower are different markets. Common widths sell fastest.
  • Gearbox condition. The expensive part on a rotary cutter, a tiller or a post hole digger. A sound gearbox that turns freely carries the item.
  • Driveline and shield. Present and complete. A missing driveline lowers the value more than people expect.
  • Deck and structure condition. Rusted-through cutter decks, bent blades and cracked A-frames are the faults that matter. Surface rust is not.
  • On generators: output and whether it makes power. A PTO generator that produces rated output has a real market among people wanting standby power.

The paperwork, and what you can deduct

Farm equipment is not titled. Ownership is established with the purchase invoice, a bill of sale, a farm asset record, or a lien release if it was financed. Find the serial plate and photograph it. If it is part of an estate or a farm partnership, whoever signs needs authority to sign for it.

Giving Center sells the equipment and your deduction is the gross sale proceeds on Form 1098-C, itemized per item. Items in this class commonly sell between $500 and $5,000, where Form 8283 Section A applies and no appraisal is required. Older or heavily worn examples fall under $500, where the deduction is the lesser of fair market value or $500 and we send a written acknowledgment rather than a Form 1098-C. If you donate several items together each is itemized, and similar items are grouped for the IRS reporting thresholds.

Honest framing: a single old rotary cutter will most likely produce a deduction under $500. Six implements together commonly clear that in aggregate, and a group donated with a tractor does better still. This is the category where grouping matters most and where we would most encourage it. Most farm equipment is a depreciated business asset, which makes a conversation with your accountant worth having before the pickup. Farm business property follows different rules than a personal donation.

PTO equipment donation questions

Is one old brush hog worth donating?

The deduction will likely be under $500 and the truck costs the same as for six. Worth doing if you want it gone; much more worth doing as part of a group.

How do I know what to include?

Walk the shed. Anything that hooks to a three-point hitch or a PTO shaft belongs on the form. List all of it and we will sort out what makes sense.

Several drivelines are missing.

List which ones. A missing driveline lowers the value on that item more than people expect, and it is worth being accurate about.

The cutter deck is rusted through.

That is the fault that ends a rotary cutter. Photograph it. It will be a low-value item and it can still ride along on a group pickup.

I have a PTO generator that has never been tested.

Say that rather than guessing. If it produces rated output it has a real market for standby power, and if you do not know, we will have it checked.
