Office trailer donation

Donate an office or jobsite trailer once the project has closed out

Jobsite trailers get left behind. The project ends, the trailer is demobilized to a yard, and it sits for years because nobody wants to pay to move it again. That last part is the whole problem, and it is the part we handle.

Where donated office trailers come from

General contractors after a long project closes out. A 8x20 or 10x40 office trailer with a desk, an HVAC unit and a bathroom is a useful thing that nobody has a next job for.

Schools, churches and municipalities that used a modular unit as temporary space. When the permanent building opens, the trailer becomes a line item somebody has to resolve.

Rental and modular space companies retiring units off a fleet. Those are usually the best condition we see because they were maintained to rent.

The expensive part, and the honest caveat

This is the category where transport genuinely can decide the answer. A small office trailer on its own axles tows behind a truck and moves cheaply. A 12x60 modular unit on blocks, skirted, with the axles and tongue removed and stored somewhere, is a different job: it needs axles reinstalled, a permit, sometimes an escort, and occasionally a crane.

So we ask up front: is it on its wheels or on blocks? Are the axles and tongue still with it? Is it skirted or decked in? Is anything connected, power, water, sewer or data? The disconnect is your side, done by the right trade. The move is ours.

If the honest answer is that permitting and moving a large modular unit costs more than it will sell for, we will tell you, and we will say so before anything is scheduled rather than after.

What decides what one brings

  • Size and configuration. 8x20 through 12x60, open plan, private offices, or office plus storage combination.
  • On wheels or on blocks. A road-ready trailer with axles and tongue is worth meaningfully more, purely because it is cheaper to move.
  • Interior condition. Flooring, paneling, ceiling tile, and any water staining. Roof leaks are the usual killer.
  • Systems. Working HVAC, a functioning bathroom, a water heater, adequate panel and outlets. Each one adds.
  • Security and windows. Bar-guarded windows, a sound door and locks matter to a buyer putting it on a jobsite.

Makes we accept

Modular and jobsite units are shopped by manufacturer.

  • Office and modular: WillScot and Williams Scotsman, Mobile Mini, ModSpace, General Finance and Pac-Van, Satellite Shelters, Wilmar, Karmod.
  • Manufacturers: Fleetwood, Cavalier, Champion, Skyline, Schult, Palm Harbor, Clayton commercial units.
  • Storage and combo containers: Mobile Mini, Conex-based units, Sea Box, BigSteelBox.

Manufacturer names appear here so you can find your own trailer. No manufacturer sponsors, endorses or is affiliated with this program.

The paperwork, and what you can deduct

Trailer titling varies more by state than anything else we accept. Some states title every trailer, some only above a weight threshold, and some issue nothing at all for smaller ones. We will tell you which applies where you are, and the state title rules page covers the process. Where there is no title, a bill of sale plus the VIN or serial plate off the tongue is what we need. Office trailers are a mixed bag: some carry a vehicle title, some are titled as manufactured structures, and some large modular units are treated as real property once they are set on a foundation. That last case is genuinely different and we will tell you if yours falls into it, because it changes the paperwork entirely.

Giving Center sells the trailer and your deduction is the gross sale proceeds on Form 1098-C. A sound road-ready office trailer often clears $5,000, where the IRS requires a qualified appraisal and Form 8283 Section B at your expense. A tired unit with roof leaks and dated interior can land under $500, where the deduction is the lesser of fair market value or $500 with a written acknowledgment instead.

If the trailer is a depreciated business asset, or if it has been assessed as real property, talk to your accountant before the pickup. Those two situations follow different rules and both are worth a professional's five minutes.

Office trailer donation questions

It is on blocks and the axles are gone. Can you still take it?

Sometimes. Axles have to be sourced and reinstalled, and a permit arranged. Tell us the size and location and we will give you a straight answer on whether the move makes sense.

Who disconnects the power and water?

You do, through a licensed trade. That is a code and safety matter. The move, the permit and the paperwork are ours.

The roof leaks and the floor is soft in one corner.

Tell us the extent. It lowers the sale. On a badly gone unit the honest answer may be that a local buyer or a demolition contractor is a better outcome, and we will say so.

We are a school district. Anything different?

Only that whoever signs needs authority to sign for the entity, and your own surplus-property procedures may require a resolution in your records.

Do you take storage containers and Conex boxes?

Yes, subject to the same transport math. Describe it on the form and we will assess it.
